The Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) is a network of changemakers from South Africa and the United States, building solidarity and action for a more equitable future.

Through leadership development, community building, design labs and narrative change, AFRE supports the personal development and capacity of leaders, and catalyses broader social change activity, based on a view that both are required to achieve racial equity.

Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity 2019

The Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) program is based at Columbia University in New York City, in the United States; and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, in South Africa.

  • Each year, it recruits 20 high-impact leaders from South Africa and the United States to participate in an immersive, dialogue-based fellowship program.

  • Fellows participate in virtual and in-person sessions in South Africa and the United States through which they share experiences, build connections and networks, and create and test new strategies for social change.

  • Fellows also develop projects whilst receiving a stipend, individualised coaching and other supports to enhance their development.

  • Fellows graduate from the fellowship experience into our Senior Fellows community, which further accelerates and amplifies their individual and collective impact. Senior Fellows have access to a variety of opportunities from AFRE for continued learning, connection, community building and collective action. These opportunities include Columbia University courses, peer-to-peer convenings, and resources for projects, capacity-building and growth of ideas that strategically advance racial equity in their communities. Senior Fellows also participate in the global network of Atlantic Senior Fellows convened by the Atlantic Institute based at Rhodes House, Oxford in the UK.

I am moved by the ambitions of the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity and the opportunities the program will create for dynamic thinking and action to address anti-Blackness and dismantle structural racism.
